Old Town Manassas Gingerbread Contest Begins

Friday, November 06, 2009

Molasses, ginger, flour, baking soda – just a few of the ingredients you’ll need to shop for to get ready for the Gingerbread House Contest in Old Town Manassas this holiday season. For 14 years now, Historic Manassas, Inc. has displayed the talents of local amateur “architects” in the shop windows of Old Town during the annual Merry Old Town festivities. The most creative are rewarded for their efforts. The public is invited to view the various structures and vote on them in the shops and on-line. An adult and child category this year will have a first place prize of a $100.00 Old Town Gift Card. Second place walks away with a $75.00 card, and third place takes a $50.00 card, courtesy of the contest sponsor, Baker-Post Funeral Home.

To download the rules and regulations, and an official entry form, go to the events calendar at the HMI website, www.visitmanassas.org before November 20. Houses need to be completed and delivered to the Visitors Center (9431 West Street) in Old Town by November 25, and friends and family can vote on their favorites in the shops and on the website beginning December 1.

Historic Manassas Inc., is a non-profit organization charged with the promotion and preservation of Old Town Manassas. Other Merry Old Town activities include the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, December 4 at approximately 6:30 p.m. or right after Santa Clause arrives on the VRE! On Saturday, December 5, 2009, the 64th Annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade steps off at 10:00 a.m. On Sunday, December 6, 2009 the merchants of Old Town hold their Annual Open House. To round out the weekend, you can take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of Old while waiting for all your newly purchased gifts to be wrapped!

“Old Town downtown is rolling out the welcome mat and inviting everyone to our town for the holidays” said Patty Tracy, Executive Director of Historic Manassas, Inc.
