Old Town Earth Day Events

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

People are living life differently for a number of reasons these days. Many are conserving to help the environment, to lower monthly bills, or save for their retirement. Lately many more are relying on the generosity of others to help them through these tough economic times. Earth Day 2009 will once again be celebrated in Old Town Manassas to not only promote the need for a sustainable environment, but to encourage people to look around them and possibly donate what they don’t need to others that might. It’s an Old Town with a “green” attitude when Historic Manassas, Inc. hosts the 2nd Annual Spring Cleaning Day on Saturday, April 18, 2008 in and around the Harris Pavilion from 10am until 3pm. The day includes exhibitors from non-profit and civic organizations providing recycling and environmental information, live entertainment throughout the day, kid’s rides and crafts. The City of Manassas Trash and Recycling Department will be providing a Shred It truck for people to securely dispose of personal documents for free. BB&T has not only offered the use of their parking lot at Center and Church Streets for the community shred, but they are the generous sponsor of this effort to prevent identity theft.

At the Harris Pavilion, several organizations will be ready to accept various items that are usually sent to the landfill. Habitat for Humanity will be on hand to accept gently used tools and any building materials or hardware. The Manassas Host Lioness Lions will be collecting eyeglasses, hearing aids, empty inkjet cartridges, DVD’s, digital cameras, laptop computers and MP3 players. Gently used clothing and household items can also be donated on site. Textiles of all kinds including old blankets, towels, rugs without rubber backing, worn out/stained clothing that are not fit for donation, and batteries can be dropped off for recycling at the BB&T parking lot. There will also be a chance to sign up as a volunteer to help at the April 22 Earth Day Clean Up of Jennie Dean Park, sponsored by The City of Manassas Community Development department, and Manassas Art Guild will be on hand offering recycled material art projects for the kids and earth-inspired works of art.
After all that, have some fun on a free, environmentally-friendly, pedal-powered pedicab ride around Old Town, sponsored by Fulton Bank. Enjoy the funky, world-beat music of Mojo Nation. Let the kids loose on the Jungle Tree Climb and Safari Maze while you take advantage of the sidewalk sale by merchants “spring-cleaning” their stores throughout Old Town, and of course the Manassas Farmers Market across from the train depot. Be sure to visit The Manassas Museum, where a Civil War Encampment Reenactment will be spread out on the lawn from 10 am until 4pm.
