Old Town Restaurant Changes More Than the Name

Tuesday, January 08, 2008

Chances are you’ve had the pizza at King’s Bite restaurant in Old Town Manassas. That little, non-descript pizzeria on Center Street that you’ve driven past so many times has been given a major face lift in more than one way. Owner Don Jose’ has recently completed a total transformation from pizzeria to a more upscale Italian restaurant that he proudly calls Piccolino’s Italian Ristorante’.  He is hoping that his exterior facelift that includes a fresh brick façade, dramatic arched entryway and wrought iron touches will draw you inside to experience the rest of his changes to the place.

You will immediately notice that the once exposed kitchen has been very tastefully closed off from the dining room, eliminating the “take out” feel that the restaurant once had. The clamor of the kitchen has been replaced with easy listening music, and the small but quaint dining room is now very neatly set with linen tablecloths and napkins and decorated with images of Italy. You cannot help but wonder what changes took place on the menu, and the proud chef enthusiastically presents one for your perusal. The chicken wings and potato skins have been replaced with fried calamari and prosciutto with roasted peppers. Gone are the standard subs, gyros and onion rings, replaced with a somewhat more refined Italian selection of veal, chicken and pasta dishes. For die-hard King’s Bite fans and casual diners, a variety of pizza is still on the menu. The biggest surprise comes in the form of daily specials that can include baked oysters, crab and asparagus-topped chicken, and a grilled rack of lamb. The menu, as well as the wine list is simple yet extensive, and reasonably priced.

The Manassas Rotary recently held a progressive dinner in Old Town Manassas, with guests experiencing a different course in several restaurants that included Piccolino’s. Linda Robertson, Executive Director of Historic Manassas and coordinator of the Rotary dinner says “I was amazed at the transformation of this little pizza parlor into such a beautiful fine dining restaurant.” Karen Wayne, Club President, raved about the food. “The portions were so generous that many of our members wondered if they'd be able to eat more at the following restaurants” said Wayne.  “We were so glad we included Piccolino’s in our evening."

What has not changed is Don Jose’s commitment to Old Town and good food. “We are a family owned restaurant and take pride in offering friendly service to the Old Town Manassas area" boasts Jose'. "We take pleasure in our ability to provide quality family dining using the freshest and most innovative ingredients in a pleasant and inviting atmosphere. There has to be a choice on the menu to please everyone!”
