Historic Manassas, Inc. is looking for several volunteers for the four-day sesquicentennial event from Thurs., July 21 through Sun., July 24, 2011. Volunteers are needed to serve in three categories: docents, ambassadors and support services. Docents will don period clothing, talk with visitors and provide educational background on sites. Ambassadors will ride the shuttle buses to all the sites and share information about Old Town Manassas and commemoration events, as well as ticket information. Support services will help with general responsibilities, like helping with tents, ice and set-up needs. Historic Manassas, Inc. (HMI), in coordination with the City of Manassas, is gearing up for the 2011 Sesquicentennial Civil War Commemoration as part of Virginia’s statewide 150th Civil War Commemoration.

Historic Manassas, Inc. Sells Shuttle Bus Ticket Package for July Events Historic Manassas, Inc. is selling bus ticket packages for the 150th Civil War Commemoration scheduled for Thurs., July 21 through Sun., July 24. Visitors can now purchase a shuttle bus/ticket package for $20 per person/per day that includes access to all sites, bus transfer fees and a $5 Manassas gift card. The ticket package fare is a one-time payment and valid for one day only. All events can be accessed for free with the shuttle-fare payment, which also includes the Manassas Museum entrance fee, except for the ticketed-event, Sesquicentennial Blue and Grey Ball on Sat., July 23, which is an additional $75 per person.

Historic Manassas, Inc. is gearing up for the Sesquicentennial commemoration kick-off event, the Blue and Gray Ball, scheduled for Sat., Jan. 22, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, Va. Tickets are $150 per person and guests are encouraged to be in 1860s’ formal period attire. The event will transport guests back in time to the 1860s at the end of the antebellum where attendees will enjoy a cocktail reception with special Civil War guests, Civil War period dinner, dessert reception, entertainment and 1860s period dancing.

A Santa Float Design Contest is being offered by the Greater Manassas Christmas Parade Committee to update its Santa Float for the Greater Manassas Christmas Parade in December in Old Town Manassas. They are also in search of a Grand Marshal for the 2010 Greater Manassas Christmas Parade and Woman of the Year. The selected Grand Marshal and Woman of the Year will be speaking at the Christmas Tree Lighting and riding in a car in the parade; while the winner of the design contest will be able to ride in the new float with Santa during the Greater Manassas Christmas Parade. Matt Brower opened his new shop on May 15, Simply Sweet on Main, the day after his 30th birthday. Originally from Tallahassee, Florida, the young chef followed his fiancé to Manassas after she accepted a job in the DC area. “I looked everywhere, and this was a great space, in a great area with a family feel,” said Brower of the former Javaroo coffee shop on Main Street in Old Town Manassas. Historic Manassas, Inc. officially welcomed the new shop to Old Town in a Ribbon cutting ceremony on June 7. Mayor Hal Parrish was on hand to help the new owner cut the ribbon, with City Manager Larry Hughes, HMI staff and other Old Town business owners in attendance.

Manassas Railway Festival Excursion Tickets Go On Sale

Historic Manassas Inc. has announced that VRE excursion train ride tickets for the upcoming Railway Festival and Civil War Weekend on June 5 will be available beginning Friday, May 14. Sponsored by Northwest Federal Credit Union at Signal Hill, the VRE excursions run on the hour between 11am and 3pm from Manassas to Clifton and back, with each trip lasting approximately 40 minutes. Tickets are $6.00 and must be purchased in person at the train depot in Old Town between 9am and 5pm seven days a week. Children under 2 years old ride free. Working moms and dads will be pleased to know that tickets will also be available at Old Town’s favorite specialty gift shop – the Whimsical Galerie. The shop is open until 6pm Monday through Wednesday, and until 8pm Thursday through Saturday, and is located at 9070 Center Street.

Now in its 16th year, the Annual Manassas Heritage Railway Festival was originally created to celebrate and educate on the rich railroad history that Manassas has to offer. Unfortunately, the cast of the hit television show Mercy isn’t expected to make an appearance in Manassas any time soon, but Andrew Moser, CEO and President of Hello Nurse Scrubs Inc., certainly wouldn’t mind that kind of publicity. The Hello Nurse Scrubs Company recently opened its doors on Battle Street in Old Town Manassas with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Moser was joined by Manassas Mayor Harry “Hal” Parrish, City Manager Larry Hughes, Historic Manassas, Inc. Board President Creston Owen as well as HMI staff members to commemorate the occasion. On Thursday, March 25, Historic Manassas, Inc. and the City of Manassas were presented with Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Awards for $45 million in private investment and contribution of more than 40,000 volunteer hours toward downtown revitalization since being designated as a Virginia Main Street community in 1989. Owen is pleased to announce today that the First Division of the Army of Northern Virginia,(www.bonnieblue.net), a group that represents over 4,000 civil war reenactors, has agreed to hold its 25th annual convention in the Manassas area, on November 12th and 13th 2010, after holding it in Fredericksburg, VA. The votes have been counted and the results for the two categories – adult and children, are in. Debbie Haight, the Old Town Visitor’s Center manager, had the pleasure of notifying the winners. First place in the individual child category went to brothers Curtis and Aaron Forman of Manassas. The youth group from St. Thomas United Methodist Church took second place, and Tyler Tonneson was the third place winner. Osbourn High School students Brook Mvonio and Haley Nowak worked together to capture first place in the adult categories with their towering ice cream cone castle. Samantha Meyer and Jennifer Smith took second and third place respectively. Prizes for the contest were $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place in Old Town Gift Cards.

Recently when Manassas attorney Greg Stambaugh and his wife Julie stopped in at Opera House Gifts and Gourmet in Old Town, they had no idea that they would walk out with a wonderful early Christmas present. On a whim, Greg and Julie purchased a Merry Old Town Chocolate Bar, and opened it in the shop to see if it was a winner. Much to their delight, the chocolate bar that Greg selected contained the Golden Ticket.

In the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a young boy finds a golden ticket that, at the very least, wins him a chance to tour the most fantastic candy factory imaginable. A tour of what was once Old Town, Manassas’ candy factory might not be as wunderous to a youngster these days, so Historic Manassas, Inc. has come up with a better idea. Beginning Tuesday, November 3, the Merry Old Town Chocolate Bar will go on sale at participating merchants in Old Town Manassas. One of these milk chocolate bars contains the Golden Ticket. The lucky child (or adult!) that finds the Golden Ticket will win the opportunity to be Santa’s guest on his float in the 64th Annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade. A parent or guardian will be able accompany the winner if necessary.

The new fiscal year started off with a ‘bang’ at the July 4th “Celebrate America” event. Over 50,000 people came in to the City starting early in the afternoon and enjoyed the food, fun and entertainment that led up to another spectacular fireworks display. The weather was a perfect complement to the large crowds of smiling faces and excited children that filled the streets and sidewalks of Old Town.

A native of Manassas, Debbie brings great depth of knowledge about Manassas and the surrounding area to the position. In her role as Visitor Center Manager, Debbie is responsible for day-to-day operation of the Center including meeting and greeting the thousands of visitors each year, recruiting and training new volunteers and managing the Farmers Market.

Strolling the streets of Old Town Manassas, you’ve probably seen them in the shop windows. Cotton candy rooftops and peppermint-drop footpaths trimmed the creations of local gingerbread “artists” competing in the 13th Annual Gingerbread Contest. This year, twelve decorated structures of all sizes and shapes added to the holiday decorations that adorned various Old Town merchant windows. The public has had the opportunity to vote on their favorite Gingerbread House either in the shops or on-line since December 1.

Amateur bakers had the opportunity to enter their best in the Apple Pie Baking Contest during the Celebrate America festival on July 4 in Old Town Manassas. Judges included Mayor Hal Parrish, Okra’s and Foundation owner Charles Gilliam, Executive Chef Matthew Wood of Okra’s and Foundation, and Old Town business owner Bren Compton, who was also a judge at the Great American Pie Festival in Florida in April.

Historic Manassas, Inc. is pleased to announce that tickets for the 4th Annual Wine and Jazz Festival will be available starting Wednesday, May 21. The festival is traditionally held on Father’s Day at the Harris Pavilion in the heart of historic Old Town Manassas on Sunday, June 15. Taster’s tickets at the festival gate will be $20.00, but early birds can save $5.00 by buying them in advance at the visitor’s center at the train depot in Old Town at $15.00. Non-taster’s tickets are $10.00, and children under 10 are free.

On July 18 and 19, Alice Jones, President of Historic Manassas, Inc. and Charlyn Hasson-Brown, HMI Board Member, as well as Mr. Steve Urry, Events/Festival Coordinator, and Linda Robertson, Executive Director, participated in a statewide training presented by the Virginia Main Street (VMS) program. Luray, a Virginia Main Street community, hosted the training, which focused on heritage tourism and how downtown development organizations can promote their community’s cultural assets and attract visitors. According to the Virginia Tourism Commission, traveler spending in Virginia generated $16.5 billion in direct revenue in 2005, with one of the fastest growing segments being heritage tourism.

On March 16, HMI was presented with two Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Awards. One was for reaching $35 million in private investment in Old Town since the program began in 1985. The other milestone reached was the accumulation of 25,000 volunteer hours devoted to old town revitalization over the same period. The awards were presented at the annual Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievements ceremony held this year at the historic Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Va.
